Shear sensitive pumps for delicate and easily altered fluids
When it comes to the handling of shear sensitive liquids, it is important that a low shear pump is selected to prevent the fluid from being damaged or altered. Under force, delicate fluids can change viscosity like cream being whipped, or their solids can be crushed, like fruit pieces in a yoghurt. Whilst certain pumping technologies such as centrifugal pumps apply high shear in operation, shear sensitive pump designs are able to keep such fluids intact due to their low internal velocity and the wider tolerances between their pump casing and internal components. Failing to select a low shear pump can result in product inconsistencies, damaged solids and costly waste. If you have a shear sensitive application, then Castle Pumps’ range of reliably operating solutions can help.

FAQs
If a fluid is shear sensitive it means that they consistency or viscosity is altered under force. For example, cream when whipped gets thicker, honey when stirred gets thinner and shampoo foams up.
A low shear pump is one that keeps shear sensitive fluids intact during handling. They are characterised by their low internal velocity and wider tolerances between their casing and internal components.
No! Centrifugal pumps apply high levels of shear during operation. Shear sensitive pumps are usually positive displacement pumps due to their lower internal velocity.
